Countdown to Rice & Beans!

The year is well underway, and we’re headed straight into March, which means it’s Rice & Beans Month at Lahash!

Rice & Beans Month is an easy and meaningful way to simplify the way you eat in order to stand in solidarity with other brothers and sisters, and then share the money you saved on food with the hungry in East Africa. It’s a simple, practical, and meaningful way to make an impact on your life and way of thinking, as well as come along side of those in need.

The key ingredients of Rice & Beans Month are:

1) Simplicity – By eliminating many of the choices of what we put on our table, we can get rid of excess, put aside non-essentials, and really take in account our “lifestyle” of eating. Together rice and beans form a complete protein, and adding fruits and vegetables will help provide a nutritious diet.

2) Solidarity –  Much of the world survives on a limited variety of staple foods for every meal. Many of us, however, are used to a rich variety of foods.  Rice & Beans Month can open your eyes to how much of the world eats, especially those in East Africa. You can identify with those on the other side of the globe by adopting some of their habits and routines. And know that they, too, are participating and praying for you throughout the month!

3) Sharing – By simplifying your diet, you will notice a decrease in your grocery bill.  Keep track of your food expenses during March, and subtract that total from your usual monthly food budget. Any amount you saved – from a single meal to an entire month – can be donated to Lahash to directly benefit the nutritional needs of vulnerable children across East Africa.
