Farming for the Future

The money raised through Rice & Beans Month is helping create greater food security in vulnerable communities across East Africa through sustainable agriculture programs.

In Tanzania a new plot of farmland was purchased to allow children and families to begin growing their own food. It is a training ground to teach both kids and adults about farming, and the harvests will provide food for vulnerable families. “The kids will be able to learn more about agriculture and animal husbandry,” said Edwin Angote, Lahash’s East Africa Director. “We hope that during the rainy season they will be able to plant corn as a start.”

Kids from the Lahash sponsorship program pitch in to help clear the land in Tanzania.

In northern Uganda, farmland has also been purchased near Amazing Grace Children’s Home. This land will help provide both food and water. Mama Susan Tabia, the founder of Amazing Grace, wrote, “The purchase of this two acre piece of land will make it easy to identify a secure spot for drilling a well and also grow enough vegetables for food to sustain the children.” These types of sustainable food projects will continue to provide needed nutrition for a more stable and healthy future.

When you donate your Rice & Beans Month savings you are not only helping supply immediate nutritional needs, but also funding projects like these which empower local communities to provide a more stable and healthy future for their children.
