Rice & Beans – Kids’ Perspectives!

Charis, Tobin, and Arden are three kids who participated in Rice & Beans Month for the first time last year. If your family is thinking about joining this year, you might be interested in what they have to say:

What did you like about Rice & Beans Month?
“Getting to try new recipes and eating the same fare as the kids in Africa, even if it was in larger quantities than they normally have. We were able to give a substantial amount of money, because we are a large family and we saved a lot.” – Charis

What was hard about Rice & Beans Month?
“Not eating bacon! Or any of my other favorite foods!” – Tobin

So … what did you do when you didn’t like the food?
“I put it aside and waited for the next meal.” – Arden
“I still ate it anyway because I knew that that would be all I get for that meal, and I don’t want to starve.” – Tobin
“I ate all of it and remembered that the kids in Africa don’t really have a choice about liking it or not because there’s nothing else for them.” – Charis

What do you want to say to kids who are thinking about joining this year?
“The kids in East Africa know that we’re making sacrifices for them. Not everyone has what they want or enough food to eat. We can be thankful that we have food, and we should help people with that … I knew that God wanted me to do it.” – Arden
“It’s neat to see how other kids around the world eat on a daily basis. You can survive anything for one month, so give it a go!” – Charis

So, kids, what do you think about Rice & Beans Month? Are you ready to give it a try? Or, if you’re already participating, how’s it going so far? Spend some time praying for hungry kids today, and talk with your family about making a difference in their lives this year!
